Top Ten Tuesdays: Beach Reads

Top Ten Books in my Beach Bag

I read so much and usually at night before I go to bed (leading to many sleepless nights since I was in Elementary School), so I don't usually have books that I bring around with me (and then nowadays I use my Kindle for everything).

So I may be approaching this slightly differently than most. I'm picking books that if friends or family (or even strangers) recognize it, see the cover, or just in general want to use it as a way to jumpstart a conversation, it would lead to an interesting one.

Hero by Alethea Kontis
I tried really hard to cut down the amount of fairytales that could be on this list, the one problem of course being that as evident by this blog, I real a lot of them. The Woodcutter Sisters however, are a little bit different than most writing wise, and I'd say cover-wise as well. I can never decide if I think the cover is bad or brilliant... I also haven't read this second book yet, and would very much like to so it's been on my mind lately.

Curtsies and Conspiracies by Gail Carriger
I want to talk about this book, that's what it comes down to. I think the cover and title are eye-catching enough for someone to ask, and then I'd plunge right in. I debated whether I'd want the Parasol Protectorate series here instead, but decided this one would be easier to explain and a better book for the beach.

Dollhouse by Anya Allyn
When I get my hands on the new version of this book, you bet I'm going to be reading and reviewing it. The older version kept me on edge and freaked me out and the new cover is definitely eye-catching.

Eastridge Academy: School for Adventurers by Jennifer Young and Kara Loo
Another book I just want to talk about to people, however it's also a good book to just read off and on, since I know the plot so well. I originally read this book in it's online format years and years ago, then participated in a writing project for a time. This book contains good memories for me.

Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier || Review
I mean, look at this cover. It just screams awesome, right? I think it would surely attract eyes if not questions

World War Z by Max Brooks
I don't like war stories. I don't like zombie stories that much. I don't usually like books that are serious literature for adults. I adore World War Z. I guess everything was just balanced in the right way to make it one of my top ten books of all time. Though reading it on the beach may make me afraid to go into the water (what if there are zombies waiting to munch on me!?)

Darkhouse by Karina Halle || Review
Another horror tale, this time taking place at a lighthouse, making the beach kinda/sorta the setting. It's also got a great cover and the start to one of my favourite series that I'd love to share (being on the blog tour for the fifth book is still one of the highlights of my blogging career). I'm rearing up for a reread of the entire thing soon, as I need to tackle those newer books

WWW: Wake by Robert J. Sawyer || Review
Science Fiction has never been a more fitting description of a book. This book is full of SCIENCE. Also it's a good read with a unique plot and I would love to have someone inquire about it.

Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen || Review
Unique Robin Hood retelling that I would love to re-read sometime soon.

Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe by Shelly Coriell
I do have one stereotypical contemporary beach-worthy read, and that's this one. It's currently my favourite contemporary book I've read this year (but then again I don't read barely any contemporary since I read to escape the real world as much as possible). This book is cute and although at times seems like it'll take a turn for the heavy (it does deal with some heavy things) our main character keeps things light.

I've been eyeing off the latest Carriger series but I'm really waiting for Prudence to come out.

@Villa: I really like the Finishing School series, especially since we get to see so many of those characters from the first one pre-Alexia. It also is a very different perspective of the same world.

But yeah... I have to admit I'm looking forward to Prudence so damn much lol. Release is so far awaaay.

I have been unsure about World War Z, but you may have convinced me. I am not much or a zombie fan either. Scarlet sounds like my kind of book!

WWZ is so hard to explain lol It's different than most books. Also it has one of the best audio books in existance.

You can never read too many fairy tales :D My favorite thing to read! Hero was pretty good, but Wildwood dancing <3 One of my favorite authors and it's SUCH an amazing book. The same for Scarlet. Great to find another blogger who shares my love for fairytales. Happy reading!
